In June 2013, the Danish mussel policy was adopted. The overall aim of the mussel policy is a reduced environmental impact from mussel production compared to the situation in 2013, when the policy was adopted. Focus is on ensuring the right balance between mussel fishery and nature conservation. With the policy more focus is thus given to a green transition of the way fishing for blue mussels is carried out in Danish waters. The industry is given incentives to develop other ways of producing mussels e.g. bottom cultures and long line production.
Mussel fishery and production of mussels in Danish waters must be sustainable and meet the EU environmental directives (Habitats Directive and Wild Birds Directives).
In Natura 2000 areas, special protection is needed in relation to designated habitats and species. As the responsible authority regarding regulation of fisheries, it is the task of the Ministry for Environment and Food to ensure the balance between development of the fishing industry on one side and the environmental concerns on the other side. Harvesting of mussels as well as other forms of mussel production must not be an obstacle to reaching/ sustaining favorable conservation status of the designated habitat types and species in the concerned Natura 2000 sites.
The positive effects of mussel fishery and other types of mussel production, such as the removal of nutrients from the marine environment, have to be taken into account when assessing the environmental effects of mussel production and fishery.
The objectives and milestones of the Danish mussel policy set the direction for mussel production in Danish waters toward 2020. The Danish Mussel Policy includes three tracks.
Track 1: Objectives and principles for mussel dredging
For the management of mussel fishery in Natura 2000 areas focus of the policy is on a decided maximum acceptable area effect set at 15 percent.
Track 2: Green adaptation of future mussel production
This track focus on the promotion of line mussel farming and bottom cultures.
Track 3: The Danish model for future mussel production
This track describes a holistic approach to the production of mussels considering the different production methods and bearing in mind local environmental conditions.
